Patient Testimonial

Joyce Johnson

Joyce Johnson

Joyce Johnson, 74, of Independence, Ky., was enjoying a normal day at home when she began having progressive breathing difficulties. After visiting her doctor, she was immediately sent to St. Elizabeth Edgewood Hospital and admitted. Her oxygen levels were noted at 74 percent. Normal levels range from 95 to 100 percent.

Feeling scared and uncertain, Joyce received oxygen treatments, steroids and antibiotics to stabilize her condition. After staying at the hospital for 12 days, she chose HealthSouth Northern Kentucky Rehabilitation Hospital to help her get back home.
When Joyce arrived at HealthSouth Northern Kentucky, she could not walk due to weakness and was on oxygen 24 hours a day. But, her therapy team greeted her with enthusiasm and confidence, encouraging her to move forward with rehabilitation.
“My therapy team made it as easy as possible,” Joyce says. “They were friendly, concerned and efficient, making me feel like I was the only patient they had.”

Joyce’s therapy team provided her with a strong dose of hope, offering a can-do attitude and willingness to be there for her every step of the way. Enjoying her therapy routine, she made great strides overcoming her challenges of walking and breathing. And her daughters, Shelly and Lori, and sister, Connie, supported Joyce from start to finish.

After 12 days in rehabilitation, Joyce returned home, walking on her own. She continued in outpatient therapy for one month, building her strength even more. Today, Joyce is driving, cleaning and cooking, and uses oxygen only at night. She is thankful for her time at HealthSouth Northern Kentucky.
